“When he got there, they handed him a fifth of scotch without a word, called the cops, and then vanished.” 🧡

Before oprahsbookclub told me to read this, prose_and_palate told me to check this out and they were both not wrong !!! This is a smart, witty and thoroughly entertaining book about the residents in the Cause Houses housing project in Brooklyn. An old, usually drunk deacon (named Sportcoat) of the local Five Ends Baptist Church shoots a young drug dealer from the projects that he knows well. As the story unfolds, we meet a huge cast of characters, vibrant and full of community from this housing project and the neighboring areas. There’s mystery, romance and huge wheels of cheese involved in this book and it takes us on a really fun ride while providing social commentary about the neighborhood and community. It’s a 2020 must read, y’all!

Thank you to this_is_edelweiss and riverheadbooks for the opportunity to read and provide an honest review of this book. 🧡
