“There, we listened to admonition after admonition to stay in school, to stay abstinent, and to stay away from drugs and alcohol. (The formerly incarcerated stopped by, with some frequency, to drive these points home via slideshows that ended with cookies and lemonade.)” 💙

Read this back in Feb with the but lent it out before I could take any photos ! Just got it back! Such a powerful book that shines a light on the opioid crisis in Kensington, PA and makes it a very human and relatable experience. It’s a story of two sisters, one who is a cop and one who is addicted to drugs and lives on the street. It’s a story of love and not giving up on the ones you love. Even with such a dark and gritty topic, this book shines hope in moments that make it really beautiful. There are moments in this book that are uncomfortable but ultimately and unfortunately, I think it is a very realistic portrayal of families in the opioid crisis. It also shows family in a more broad definition, outside of the very sanitized, wholesome family portrayals we often see. What constitutes family and what can you expect from family? Brilliant book and can’t wait to read more of lizmoorebooks work! 💙
