Read this book along with some folks last month and it was A fascinating look at David Fairchild, an exploring botanist, who brought so many of the foods we enjoy today to the States. There’s too many to list but the list was very surprising to me and included banana, mango, avocado and broccoli! It was amazing, given the time period he lived in, that Fairchild was able to transport the cuttings and seedlings from all over the world back home to the States so farmers could try to grow them. It’s very fortuitous that Fairchild had a friend and benefactor such as Lathrop to fund his explorations. I personally enjoyed the history of the cherry blossom trees in D.C. The writing dragged a bit and the middle was hard to get through at times but the last 1/3 of the book flew by for me. I also loved the connection between Fairchild and Alexander Graham Bell! 💛

  1. Omg my MIL went on a tour to DC and told me I HAVE to go sometime to see the cherry blossoms. I didn’t know there was actual history about them though. Pretty cool, thanks for sharing
