“Listen, I’m going to do you a favor and introduce you to real fries… Straight ahead, the golden arches hovered high above a McDonald’s, it’s roof covered with splotches of snow.” p.231 ❤️

4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ! A poignant novel about immigration and the lives of a family trying to make a better way for their daughter in the United States. It’s like many immigrant stories – full of sacrifice, compassion and grit. I really liked how it illustrated how communities can form and come together to support those who are new or in need. I loved the glimpses of the other immigrant families in the apartment complex that the Riveras lived in. I also appreciated that it was not in California or Texas, places we often think of immigrants in but in Delware. The writing felt a little simplistic for me and I would have liked to have read Maribel’s POV as one of the many POVs in the book. But I still recommend for people interested in the immigrant experience to pick this one up. I read this along with my College’s alumni book club ! How cool is that ? Shout out to grinnellcollege for offering opportunity for alums to connect through reading ❤️

  1. Girlllll why would you include McDonald’s fries in this post?! I just ate lunch and this is making me want to run around the corner to McDonald’s. I haven’t had their fries in forever and upon seeing your post I could smell them. 🍟🍟🍟I guess we know what I’ll be having for dinner
