Two-Step Verification (2FA) is one of the best steps we can take to secure any important account we have associated with a service, product, or platform. It does not matter if it is a social network, a streaming platform or a video game, that double authentication factor can be key to not having problems when it comes to losing control over that account. And the case of Instagram was no different because thanks to its hundreds of millions of active users around the world, it has the possibility of shielding our account through an authentication application or with SMS. Anyway, it seems that Facebook has found a way to add an extra security bonus, using another of the house apps: WhatsApp. Codes within chats It has been one of the most prolific researchers in the mobile app industry, Alessandro Paluzzi, who has found evidence that Facebook wants to add a new form of two-step verification to Instagram through codes that we would reach WhatsApp chats. A simple and fast formula that would avoid the use of third-party solutions, such as authentication applications from Google, Microsoft, etc. This method is not strange and is already used, for example, by Telegram, which instead of sending the codes through SMS prefers to do it through the chats of the app itself, in the event that we have it installed in more than one device. For example a tablet, a computer or another smartphone. So in this case with Instagram, Facebook imitates those of Pável Dúrov and kills two birds with one stone by linking in some way to its other two social networks, which its users count in the billions. As the researcher reveals in his message on Twitter, Instagram warns the user that “we will need to enable SMS first and then we will send a code to his WhatsApp.” At the moment, this is more of a preview of features that will arrive in the coming months, than something we can use from now on. So while it arrives, remember to maintain the security of your account with double verification through specific apps, lest you lose it and someone decides to publish real atrocities on your behalf.
