“In the evenings the landlady brings us tea with milk.” – 💛

Stories of refugees are so important for people to hear, learn and understand the journey that many of these families go through. But for me, the timeline shifts felt jarring to me in this book and it prevented me from really immersing myself in the story. It would take a few lines before I would re-orient myself to know which timeline we were in. The storytelling is lyrical but I would have preferred a straightforward story – the writing is so strong it would have stood on its own without the timeline shifts. I would recommend the memoir “A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea” about the journey of a Syrian refugee woman. Probably my favorite book regarding refugees. This was the November pick and always glad to read along 🧡

  1. I loved it but also found myself reading along only to realize I was in a different timeline!

  2. I can see that about the timeline! I still really enjoyed this one but I’ll definitely check out A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea, thanks for suggesting!
