“Ba refused meals and took whiskey like water.” 💙

5 star read !!! Longlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize and so well deserved. This is a stunning novel about two siblings on the run in the American West “set against the twilight of the American gold rush” (from Goodreads). Lucy and Sam are children of Chinese immigrants in the 1800s and it’s a story I have never encountered before. We all know there were Chinese immigrants at that time but other than a brief mention in history books, I haven’t read a novel that tackled the history of that time period through the experience of non-white characters and it was so refreshing and thrilling. The first section of the book moved a bit slowly but it was so well worth continuing on the journey with Lucy and Sam. This definitely made me think of In the Distance in terms of its solitude and exploration and the kids on the run made me think of This Tender Land, both 5 star books that I’ve reviewed in the past. I can’t believe this is a debut and cannot wait to read more by cpamzhang ! It was a special treat to hear her speak at an event hosted by calbookclub to close out their book club pick last week. Check out their account to see what we’re reading next !!
