“A scent of fresh-baked croissants comes through the glass door.” 💙

3.5 stars. I’m definitely the on this one. It’s about a curmudgeon and I expected him to be in his 70s but he’s 59?! That was the first sentence. I get it, it’s about a bitter, “old” man who has a greater story to tell – don’t judge a book by it’s cover type message. And it was a solid, good read for me. But it didn’t blow me away like I expected it to. After how much I loved Bear Town I thought I would love everything Backman wrote but I think his sense of humor is far different from mine which makes his humorous bits fall short for me. If I’m being totally honest, my dad has every reason to be a curmudgeon , having suffered a lot of hardship and loss in his life (including my mom’s death) and he lives life with grace and humility so I find it harder to buy-in to this behavior just because you’ve had a difficult life. Although I was kind of a fail with the buddy read (hosted by read.rewind ) because I was so late, I still loved reading everyone’s thoughts and comments! 💙

  1. Great review, I’ve been hearing raves about this one so I like hearing different opinions!

  2. I didn’t like this book as much as Beartown and Us Against You either. I read it before I read either of those, so I wasn’t disappointed in the same way.

  3. I really enjoyed this one, but maybe liked both The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper even more- curmudgeonly old men make great main characters but are not as fun in real life 😂

  4. I appreciate your take and thoughts on this, esp bringing in your personal perspective related to your dad. I enjoyed this book enough but wasn’t blown away by it either.

  5. I’m with you on this one! Read it for bookclub a few years back & had the same reaction to his age vs his actions & description! Once I read he was 59 it just didn’t work for me anymore. 🤷🏻‍♀️
